SJRA serves The Woodlands, Texas, one of America’s top communities to live, work, play, and pray, with water and wastewater services. In order to do this successfully, it takes excellent employees like Woodlands Division Senior Maintenance Technician, Matthew. Matthew works in the Field Services department, helping the operation and maintenance of SJRA’s 29 lift stations, responding to and repairing water main and sewer main breaks, and other duties. He oversees special projects such as easement clearing, tree removal, and various contracted repairs throughout the water and wastewater system. He works with various departments across SJRA to accomplish his duties. Matthew’s role is to get the water and sewer from point A to point B.
A typical day in Matthew’s role starts with a morning meeting with his department to go over the day’s planned jobs. He then goes and loads up any equipment, tools, or material needed before heading to the job site. Despite the planning he and his team do for each job, emergencies happen, and they must prioritize those over scheduled work. If a water main leaks, they drop everything to isolate the line and repair it as quickly as possible. The same goes for any customer complaints, they take those very seriously and are always a top priority. There is a lot of variety when working in the field.
SJRA takes a preventative maintenance approach to the water and wastewater system and invests in infrastructure that will be around for years to come. As the current infrastructure ages, the team is constantly looking for ways to improve the processes and increase overall efficiency while also investing in the latest and greatest technology to maximize efficiency across the board. SJRA works with its customers, such as Woodlands Water Agency, to educate the public about where their water comes from and all the work it takes to get the water delivered to them.
Matthew’s favorite part of working at SJRA is that he feels that he matters to the organization, that his work is important, and that his managers and supervisors recognize his contributions. He loves having numerous opportunities to attend trainings and advance his knowledge in the water and wastewater field. He loves knowing that his work positively affects the organization, and thus the customers as well.
Altogether, SJRA could not successfully serve The Woodlands with top tier water and wastewater services if it were not for such proficient employees like Matthew. Matthew and his team truly help SJRA preserve and protect the best water in Texas!
